Five Things to Know Before Thermage: Pulses, Timeline, and Pain Management
PIND Dermatology Clinic answers five common questions about Thermage: more pulses is not always better, results do not appear right after treatment, pain can be managed, treatment quality depends on the doctor's judgment, and the collagen-building period of three to six months after treatment still requires your own maintenance.
Before Thermage, five things are worth clarifying first: more pulses is not always better; results do not appear right after treatment; pain can be managed; treatment quality is determined by the doctor's judgment; and the collagen-building period after treatment still depends on your own maintenance. At PIND Dermatology Clinic, evaluation takes more time than the actual treatment.
Is more pulses always better?
No. With the same device, whether 300 or 600 pulses are used depends on the degree of laxity and fat distribution. 600 pulses in the wrong locations are less effective than 300 pulses placed precisely.
No sensation right after treatment — does that mean it failed?
No. Radiofrequency is not a treatment that shows results immediately. The immediate tightness comes from heat contraction; the real effect emerges gradually after collagen regeneration: it starts to be felt at one to three months and peaks at six months. So no effect right after treatment does not mean failure.
Do you have to tough out the pain?
No. Modern Thermage has cooling and vibration systems, making it far more comfortable than the previous generation; sedation can also be arranged when needed. Toughing it out actually makes muscles tense, which affects treatment positioning.
Is the result determined by the device?
No. The device only delivers energy; how much energy to use, how to distribute the pulses, and which areas to avoid all depend on the doctor's judgment. This is also why evaluation takes longer than treatment at our clinic.
Is it over once the treatment is done?
No. During the three-to-six-month collagen-building period, late nights, skipping sun protection, and smoking will consume the collagen you worked so hard to build. Once Thermage lifts the facial contour, maintaining it afterward is up to you.
